Primary Golf Courses
There are three major golf courses in Madeira. Each one is a winning choice so choosing among these would all depend on one’s preferences.
Palheiro Golf Course is a par 72 Championship Golf Course. This has 18-hole facilities (71 par). It offers a good view of Funchal because it is strategically located at 500 meters above sea level. The design of this place was made by Cabell Robinson and it initially opened in 1993. Aside from the well-maintained greens, among the facilities which can be used by customers include a stylishly made clubhouse, shop for golfclub and other equipment and a restaurant.
The Golf do Santo da Serra is another popular choice for both locals and tourists. This is perhaps one of the finest golf courses in Europe. It is a 27-hole golf course (72 par) which lies about 500 meters above the village of Machico. This golf course gets even busier during the Madeira Islands Open because it is the selected venue for this annual event. Aside from the impressive landscape within the golf course, visitors can also enjoy the view of the eastern tip of Ponta de São Lourenço. This golf course also has a pro shop, restaurant practice range and driving range. The lakes and botanical garden heighten the course’s aesthetics even more. The architect who is responsible for its design is Robert Trent Jones.
Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra
The Porto Santo Golfe is also frequented by a lot of people. This golf course is recognized as the longest one within Madeira. It became open for customers in 2004. The popularity of this golf course was heightened even more because its design was made by Severiano Ballesteros. He is a renowned champion in the sport. It has an 18-hole course, a 9-hole pitch and putt course and a practice range. Among the facilities in this golf course include a pro shop and a restaurant. This is preferred by golfers who want a more challenging game because there are several water hazards which are scattered all over the area. After a good game, visitors can relax and enjoy the view of the Atlantic Ocean.
